At last I have a picture of the 'Dumpling Inn', for years the source of conjecture and mistaken identity.
My thanks to Richard Pearce for sending it to me and Mark Grove's permission to use it.
I have always heard the 'Dumpling' being referred to as a 'Pub' or 'Inn'. In fact it was a 'tiddleywinks', one of many around the Islands. A 'tiddleywinks was a private house or residence which was granted a licence by the local magistrate to sell beer. Spirits were not permitted to be sold. Obviously, this condition was not always adhered to, but patrons requiring this service would 'wink' at the barmaid/barman instead of ordering it aloud. This resulted in a lot of places being referred to as 'The Wink'.
